Renard-Félin Sanslapareille, more often known as just Félin Sanslapareille, is an Aréolean sailor, author, explorer and member of the New Rochefort Company.
History and Biography
Early Life
Félin was born in the countryside of the region of Aubesoleil to a gunsmith, whom they fatally shot with a weapon of their father's making when they were a teenager causing Félin to escape their natal vilage for the coastal city of Marsarano. By age 17 they had become a fisher and spent much time at sea where they learned how to sail, and kept this occupation until they were pressed into the Aréolian navy during the Pastichian War. Félin served in two battles in the bay of Angoulême in which they claimed to have been directly hit by a cannonball and lived. As a sailor for the crown, Félin heard of many faraway lands they never could have previously fathomed as an illiterate fisher, and would often ask the more knowledgeable officers on the ship about different parts of the world. While at sea they somewhat learned how to read and write from a mate who once was a teacher at the Solar Order. Once the war ended and Félin was paid their two Dinars, they immediately spent them to embark on a ship headed for the bustling port city of Rochefort, where many claimed expeditions for a "New World" were originating.
Unfortunately despite their best efforts, Félin could not manage to embark on any of the first expeditions to the new world, being too poor and of peasantly blood. During that time of wait, Félin took to writing, publishing many very short pamphlets about fictional adventures in the new world (none of them being accurate) and a xenophobic polemic about Pastichians living in the port which led to a prominent merchant, Selemez De Desmoronarse getting tar and feathered out of the city.
Explorer Career
By the year 1670, Félin was 22 and still desperate for adventure, this is when they heard of a new expedition led by the up and coming merchant Marquis de Remuva. Félin immediately rushed for the port and went to the Anguille Colonial Office, where they were lucky enough to find the two leaders of the expedition (Remuva and Ortiz) and asked them to let them join the expedition. Remuva, reasonably confused, rejected Félin's offer, which was followed by them getting on the floor, crying, begging the explorer to please let them on the ship, telling their life's story. Félin's authorial career piqued Remuva's interest, and picked up a copy of the Pastichian pamphlet, asking them to come back the day after. Remuva, impressed that such a lowborn could even write at all, and in need of another officer for their expedition, let Félin join the expedition as its third official member.
Company Career
Shortly after joining the expedition, the crew discovered new lands on the 15th of Pluviôse. Félin would help in establishing the fort there and be an original member of the newly formed New Rochefort Company. They would go on to explore other lands, such as Félin Island (named after them). They would be promoted within the company to Officer Chief Commerce. During their short voyages around the northern Islands of the Anguille archipelago, Félin would come across the Island of New Heavensworth. Believing they were the first, they claimed the island in the name of the company and the crown. The land was deemed valuable as it contained a jungle biome, perfect for establishing a sugar plantation that would benefit the company. When it became apparent that the island was already claimed by another subject of the crown, a dispute occurred that would later be resolved through a treaty. The NRC would hold the jungle biome part and its coast, while the rest would go to any other subject of the crown. Félin was made the Master of the New Heavensworth Plantation.
They would be a participant in the First Pirate War as it was the NRC plantation that was first attacked by the pirates.
