The New Heavensworth Dispute was a confrontation in 1670 between the New Rochefort Company and the newly established Aréolean settlers at the settlement of New Heavensworth over the island of New Heavensworth. The issue was resolved through a peaceful treaty between the two parties.

Background

The New Rochefort Company was rapidly expanding since its inception a few days earlier. The Officer Chief Commerce, Renard-Félin Sanslapareille, desired to discover a jungle biome in order to establish a sugar plantation for the company. Smith Jefferson, a settler and subject of the Aréole crown, desired to find a suitable location to set up a yeoman-loving settlement in the new world.

Conflict

On the eve of the 16th of Pluviôse, Sanslapareille came across an island. Thinking it was newly discovered for the Aréolean eyes, they would claim it as Jeanrem Island for the Company. Establishing a Sun Pillar and clearing the forests were activities Sanslapareille was undertaking until Smith Jefferson stumbled into the company claim land. Jefferson had previously landed on the Island and was establishing his settlement named New Heavensworth. Frustrated at Sanslapareille's actions, Smith attacked. Wounded, Renard-Félin would alert the navy, accusing Smith of being a pirate. Jefferson, a subject of the crown, was threatened by the accusation and the possible actions the navy might have taken against him and his settlement; he offered a treaty in response.

Resolution and Aftermath

The treaty negotiated and offered read:

THE TREATY OF NEW HEAVENSWORTH

The New Rochefort Company gets exploitation and commercial rights over the jungles of New Heavensworth, permitting them to build trading facilities, plantations, etc. and profit from those. They are not permitted, however, to exploit the mineral ressources for profit, and may onlu use them to build their facilities.

Any areas outside the jungle and its coast are reserved for the residents of New Heavensworth and the NRC must ask permission from the N.H. Colony's administration before building there.

The treaty has shown to be favourable for both sides. The NRC would establish the New Heavensworth Sugar Plantation, earning Sanslapareille the role of Master of New Heavensworth Plantation. The Company would also build Fort Sanslapareille. The fort would prove to be necessary following two pirate wars.
