Place down a chest and right click it ('''NOT''' SHIFT RIGHT CLICK). It will create a sign with [Private] in one line and your name in the next. To give other players acces to your chest simply add one name per line to the sign, if you run out of space on your sign right click the chest with another sign and add more names (ONLY ONE NAME PER LINE, names that are too long will be autocompleted just type as much as fits).
There are a few special tags you can use by adding them to their own line:
* [Everyone] gives everyone access to the chest.
* [Redstone] allows hoppers to remove and add items to the chest.

Infaru has a chest protection plugin to keep your items safe. Below is how you use it.

Minecraft sign for the chest protection plugin. Line 1: [Private] Line 2: Ihrs Line 3: Renarchat Line 4: [Redstone]
Example of a protection sign.

Place down a chest and right click it (NOT SHIFT RIGHT CLICK).

  • [Everyone] gives everyone access to the chest.
  • [Redstone] allows hoppers to remove and add items to the chest.
