Early Life
Childhood and Early Adulthood
Born to a modestly wealthy burgher family in Brest, Lucien Lazare was expected to follow his father into the family trades - beekeeping and medicinal supply manufacturing. However, during his early adulthood, Lucien was seduced by the vices of the capital city - liquor, brothels, and gambling. His indiscretions alienated him from his family, and by his early 20s he had been arrested for public drunkenness five times. Having exhausted the goodwill of his family, who were no longer willing to "negotiate" with the authorities, Lucien was sentenced to five years in prison.
Conversion and Career
Lucien considers his imprisonment, during which he had a profound religious experience, to have been a blessing in disguise. While mining marble in the Royal Quarry of Innsmouth, he experienced a vision of the Sun while mining thirty meters underground, convincing him that he had been given a holy mission of personal redemption and universal ministry. Upon his release, Lucien joined the Solar Order as a novice, seeking to atone for his sinful life as a teenager. His education in economic affairs caught the eye of his superiors, and he gradually rose the ranks of the Order, accumulating a reputation as a hard-nosed administrator and as a theological hard-liner against heretics and social decay. During his time in the Order, Lucien reconciled with his family, and proved to be a valuable negotiator and middle-man between the Order and the guilds of Brest. The precise nature of this relationship is not well documented, but it is generally understood that Lucien is able to secure favorable contracts for the Order while ensuring the Order's endorsement of Guild monopolies over crucial industries in Brest - in particular shipbuilding and construction work.
The New World - Mission and Mystery
The Anguille Ministry
With the discovery of Anguille, the Solar Order quickly recognized that the New World presented colossal opportunity - and risk. While rumors of native inhabitants remain unconfirmed, the Order is anxious to determine if there are native peoples in the New World, and if so, to ensure they are converted to the True Faith. Anguille also presents possible new income streams for the Order, which, while fabulously wealthy, would like to maintain a degree of financial independence from the Crown and especially the nobility.
At the same time, the Order is well aware that a far-flung colony is a potential breeding ground for heresy. Even now, they hear rumors that heretics and schismatics from the mainland are looking to escape persecution through emigration to Anguille. This will not stand. The Sun's Holy Light must, and will, shine throughout the territory of the Kingdom, whether on the mainland or in the colonies.
Faced with these challenges, the Solar Order has seen fit to appoint a man well equipped to handle them. Body Lazare has been assigned a three-fold mission: to ensure religious order in the colony, to maintain the Order's relationship with the Guilds and establish new income streams, and to convert any native peoples of the continent. The stakes are high, the responsibilities enormous - but Lucien Lazare will not let the Order down
