Conflict with Providence

Assassination

The prelude to the assassination began on May 30. The Providence Council met that day to discuss a response to the escalating spats between Vulovic and the townsfolk, particularly Father Miller. It is unknown whether any specific plotting occured at the meeting itself, however an ordinance was passed barring Vulovic from setting foot in Providence and recognizing the Grey Panther Party, a recently created militia, as the official Defenders of Providence. Wilhelm von Aknevo, the soon-to-be assassin, was also in attendance at the meeting.

The first and only Presidential Debate for the June Presidential Election would occur the following day, May 31. The occurrence was incredibly last minute; shortly after the Providence Council meeting, Ashton von Luttwitz (who was also in attendance [verification needed] at the Council meeting) was killed in combat against the Cossacks, leading Providence Mayor and Council Chairman John McHale to enter the race representing Luttwitz's United Party. Many Providencers and Kickassians were in attendence at the debate. About 45 minutes into the debate, Kickassian businessman Donnie Stump Sr. began shouting, at which point a cloaked Aknevo began assaulting Senator Vulovic. Vulovic would ultimately succumb to his wounds, while both Aknevo and Stump were killed in the ensuing response. The debate was called off shortly thereafter. Vulovic's re-election campaign would be taken up by Judge Maon Vukusti, who handily won the vacated seat.

The Grey Panthers were immediately implicated in the event, and were shortly after denounced by the Providence Council on the orders of Mayor McHale. However, many contended at the time that McHale and other civilians in the Providence government were themselves culpable in the assassination. However, no investigation or trial would ever take place. Nonetheless, the event caused an uptick in Anti-Gilgerian sentiment and the effective disestablishment of the Grey Panthers.

Legacy

The immediate consequences of the assassination were mostly felt in Urbis. McHale would win just 1 vote in Urbis in the subsequent Presidential election, even while winning the election with 21 votes (58%) nationwide. Maon Vukusti would succeed Vulovic as Senator, but wouldn't be nearly as problematic, and would even speak at Father Miller's funeral later that month. Vulovic's brand of politics mostly died with him; even the modern Nationalists within the LCP don't go as far as he did when it comes to opposing cultural diversity.

Despite it's flaws, the Lira act would withstand threats of abolition by the likes of McHale and Priest Viktor, and with some revisions remains the basis for Farun currency policy. His penal code has mostly gone unchanged since it's promulgation.
