The Cossack War, also known as the Cossack Liberation War or the Great Farun Defensive Struggle, was a conflict in central Faru involving several groups. It started soon after Faru's independence as TheUnshameless formed the Cossack Liberation Army.
Background
Starting April 13th, the Cossack Liberation Army led by TheUnshameless has been leading a killing campaign with the stated purpose of "Getting XP." His presence in the Faru region caused friction and led to the formation of the Urbis City Militia by Renarchat. The militia pursued TheUnshameless to no avail. During this time, the Faruan Army was formed by LoganXylia.
Timeline of the War
April 13th- 1st Urbis City skirmish
TheUnshameless rode to the north of Urbis City horseback, frightening local residents. The Urbis City Militia was called along with the support of a nearby Faruan Army patrol, causing a standoff. TheUnshameless claimed to have been there in peace. However, the military, supported by the militia, charged at him and severely wounded him. His horse was killed when Aleksandr Novak struck it with several arrows.
Siege of The Cossack Hole
After the 1st Urbis City Skirmish the Cossacks retreated north and replenished their forces. After rearming they launched a few more successful raids against northern settlements. The Faruan Army began to march on the Cossacks which prompted them to retreat to the Mesa badlands in the far north of Infaru. The Cossacks arrived in the mesa and repaired their old fortifications, a impervious bunker hidden in a underground reservoir. The Repairs were finished before the Faruan Army's arrival, prompting a drawn out siege.
The siege was long and uneventful, resulting in neither side gaining a decisive advantage. During the siege the Faruan Army attempted various means to breach the defenses, including explosive detonations and releasing lava into the caverns. During the siege the Faruan's suffered a single casualty to attrition after one of their soldiers burnt to death while setting lava. After several hours the Faruan army eventually withdrew from the region. Even though the siege was unsuccessful the Army established a northern base above the cavern for future incursions.
1st Badland Skirmish and 2nd Urbis City Skrimish
After a Cossack raid near the coast of cerise a contingent of 2 Urbis City Militiamen began to track the small Cossack Host consisting only of Hetman Unshameless. The Cossack force was chased to the northern badlands where a battle ensued within a Pillager outpost. The Militia force was wiped out in this engagement. Much later, a Cossack Host of 2 headed south to Urbis City. Even Though the mayor, Chaton, had forewarning of the oncoming army he refused to prepare a response, believing the Cossacks would not attack late at night. However, the Cossack host arrived and a skirmish took place, resulting in the wounding of 2 Urbis Militiaman and the Cossacks looting precious gems and food items.
Faruan Military Reorganization
With Cossack attacks continuing, and with the inability for the Faruan military to handle it, the army of the state was reorganized by LoganXylia as the South Faruan Army on the 15th of April. However, the SFA quickly proved to be equally unable to put down the Cossacks; the SFA was split on the 16th by two new military formations coming about, the Faruan Defense Force headed by De_Remuva and the Faruan Model Army headed by Mayor Chaton, after negotiations between the commanders of two armies they merged forces with Mayor Chaton becoming the self-declared Protector of the Republic under the name Faruan Model Army.
April 17th- 1st Battle of Urbis
The battle began when the Cossack forces, consisting of just one cavalry unit; Hetman Unshameless, launched a scouting party into Urbis City. The Scouting Party prompted Infaru to send a detachment of two soldiers northward in the direction of the Cossack force. The Cossack force retreated to their fort, named fort sack. The Cossacks patrolled the surround of their base while the Infaru Army reinforced the bridge connecting the Cossack occupied island to the rest of the river delta. After A while both sides dispersed, a small garrison was left in the reinforced bridge.
Battle of the Bridge
After both sides dispersed, the Cossack Force launched a minor raid into Urbis city, wounding Ambercast. The Goal of the raid was to steal more horses from Ambercast or any saddles laying about. The Cossack force however was unable to secure any such equipment and began to march back to their fort. On the way back, the cossack host came into conflict with a Infaruan Army Garrison guarding the fortified bridge south of 'Fort Sack'. The garrison consisted of one soldier; mrbgearing. Both sides exchanged arrow fire for several hours, until the Cossacks feigned an attack towards the road maker, Wanda. The Garrison used this opportunity to make a break for it and return to Urbis City, via river. As they began to depart they sent a call out for aid to the Urbis City militia / Faruan Model Army, which answered. The Cossack force gave chase to the retreating garrison, at the same time reinforcements were dispatched from Urbis city to aid in the retreat.
South Spawn Skirmish
All three forces converged in the steppes South of Spawn and North of Urbis City. Brief fighting occurred between the Cossack force and the retreating garrison before both broke away. The Cossack force set its sights on the reinforcements and were able to isolate the poorly equipped soldiers, likely local militia, resulting in the destruction of their force; 2 casualties. The Garrison was successful in their retreat to Urbis City however, leading to the final stage of the battle.
3rd Urbis city Skirmish
The Cossack Force consisted of 1 calvalry; Hetman Unshameless. The defending Faruan Force consisted of 3 soldiers. 1 cavalry; mrbgearing, and two infantry; thinqq and Venusian420 The Cossack force launched multiple probing attacks on the suburbs of Northern Urbis which caused the residents to flee and hide, one particular resident took shelter in the incomplete hull of an airship. After the cossack pushed forward with an attack, the defenders would use their superior numbers and attempt to encircle the Cossack. The Cossack would then feign a retreat, and the process would begin again.
The turning point of the battle came when the defenders began to return to the town center, the Cossack managed to kill the cavalry's horse. Without having to worry about being chased the Cossack began to harass the infantry with arrows, attempting to single out and kill individual soldiers. Another slower horse was rushed out of reserves by the defenders but that one was also slain as it attempted to cross the north urbis bridge.
The end of the battle came when Thinqq was singled out by the cossack. A fierce fight ensued in the North Urbis suburbs, ending in the demise of Thinqq. After acquiring Thinqq's godset and tools, the Cossacks proclaimed victory and retreated back to 'fort sack'. The death of Thinqq can be attributed to the refusal of mrbgearing to reinforce him due to disagreements on battle doctrine. In the wake of the battle, there was widespread disapproval of the Infaruan Model Army's performance, and feelings of betrayal voiced towards the south for their refusal to provide aid.
1st Battle of 'Fort Sack'
While commencing construction work of their fortress, the Cossacks were caught off guard as an Infaruan Army regiment, comprised of 2 Nova city militiamen came in range of the fort. Initially the Cossacks believed them to be friendly, and the Cossack; partayyy, approached, only to be attacked by soldiers; Loga and gok45. Partayyy retreated to the outer ramparts of the fort where he and Hetman Unshameless exchanged arrow fire with the Infaruan Army. The Battle ended in the demise of the Infaruan Army Regiment.
1st Siege of 'Fort Sack'
The siege was the result of a raid committed by the Cossacks, after they stole the prized horse named finger from the denizens of Johnstantinople. Johnstantinople, enraged by this theft, quickly launched a well equipped military force consisting of 2 infantryman to lay siege to 'fort sack'. The defending Cossacks consisted of 2 cavalry/infantry and 2 civilians. When the attackers arrived the immediately attempted to pillar up and breached the walls but were repelled by bow fire. Intense fighting occurred as the attackers rushed the walls and surrounding areas, attempting to locate breaches. Several times the Cossack launched a sallying force out to disorganize the attackers, while the other half of their forces continued to suppress with bow fire. The Sallying force would ironically use the horse named finger, against the attackers trying to liberate that very horse.
A blunder during the siege occurred, when one of the Cossacks inadvertently created a breach in the wall while trying to create a battlement to shoot at the attackers. The Johnstantinople militia used this opportunity to scale the walls, and fighting occurred along the ramparts. During the fighting on the ramparts, 2 civilians were killed. One Cossack serf was slain. Liberal member of the constitutional convention, John Wakefield, was injured. As the fighting became drawn out the attackers soon found that they could not breach the interior defenses and were then swiftly repelled from the fort. The siege was lifted, and a small Cossack force harassed them as they departed, however to no serious effect. While the attackers suffered a dozen or so fatal injuries there were no deaths on their side due to their well stocked supply of totems.
Ceasefire, Urbis Massacre, and End
On the 18th of April, both sides agreed to a ceasefire. The Cossacks agreed to a ceasefire in order for the Faruan forces to be able to form a government so that negotiations might be made possible. The ceasefire was violated not long afterwards but both sides stated their intentions of keeping the ceasefire. Days before, the Cossack Dignity League, the public face of the Cossack Liberation Army, and the Faruan Model Army, both announced intentions to hold marches and festivities in Urbis City on the 18th. In Urbis City on that day, the crowds gathered. However, the Cossack forces betrayed their word and started to massacre those gathered, killing Mayor and self-proclaimed Protector of the Republic Chaton, head of the Faruan Model Army. Ashley, who was the commander of the army, declared themselves to be Protector of the Republic afterwards, taking command of the entire Faruan Model Army. The guilty Cossacks escaped.
Low intensity phase
Following the massacre and a rapid developments of combat, the two sides once again began negotiating. Instances of violence still occurred while negotiations were on-going. On the 3rd of July, a treaty between the two sides was signed and ratified by the Faruan Senate. Though, shortly after the treaty, violence continued and thus it was never put into effect. 5 days later Hetman Unshameless was assassinated by a Faruan mob when he was secretly trespassing. They horrifically, yet justly, tore his limbs and drew out his intestines. Melted iron was forcefully drained into the still-alive hetman's throat. After more sequences of torture and brutality, he finally died 34 minutes later. News of the hetman's death destroyed the social and military cohesion of the remaining Cossack forces. Most fled though those that remained did not fair well.
Aftermath
The instability caused by the Cossack Liberation Army led to flaring of Anti-Cossack sentiments in various segments of Faru society. The chaos also caused towns to overthrow previously established governments such as the Company town in central Faru now called Divesk.
Reconciliation efforts were proposed but the Cossack Hetman, Unshameless, proved to be unshameless in regards to violent actions. Anti-Cossack sentiment as well as Unshameless continued violence were used as justification against the Cossacks, including the murder of Unshameless, culminating in what some argue as the Cossack Genocide.
